Obscure diesel brand surprising in 50-footer

To Sailing:

I read with interest Robert Perry’s take on the new Hinckley Bermuda 50 in the April issue, especially saying the diesel auxiliary is going to be a Nanni 4.6. Gee, with all the well-supported diesels out there running the gamut of the alphabet from Beta Marine to Yanmar, it’s surprising that Hinckley chose such an unknown engine – an engine most mechanics have never heard of and fewer still would know where to buy replacement parts.

Can you imagine how blue the air is going to get when the proud owner of a new Hinckley Bermuda 50 with a sail-away price of $1,975,000 learns on a Thursday evening while cruising off the Maine coast that he needs a new fresh water pump and that the only pump in North America is somewhere in Florida and that there isn’t UPS Next Day Saturday delivery service available to mid-coast Maine?
